History of Tyndall by Helen Brown Scoblic

"When South Dakota was officially organized as a territory by Congress in March 1861, the site of Tyndall was just a part of the great rolling prairie. As a town it came into being when the railroad came through the country. The first building was the (Chicago, Milwaukee, St Paul & Pacific Railroad) depot, and the first freight shipment was a box of rabbits (shipped December 9, 1879 to Portage WI by Alois Zienert). However, previous to that time, Dan Currier, a pioneer of imagination, had moved into the vicinity at the first signs of building the railroad, and had built his home on the very spot where he thought the railroad ties would be placed. Tyndall 4th Graders Tour the Museum

On Wednesday, May 3, 2023 the Bon Homme Heritage Museum was happy to welcome Tyndall Elementary's 4th Grade Students for a tour. At the conclusion of the visit, museum board members announced an Essay Contest for the students. The theme for 2023 is "What I Learned at the Museum and Why It Matter." All 19 students submitted an essay and on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 the contest winners were announced in an award program at their classroom. Gavin Pravecek won first place with Kolby Dvoracek and Audrey Trevino earning honorable mentions. These winners received gift certificates from the Kitchen Table Cafe and all other students received a coupon for a free malt.

Zephyr Recontre

Zephyr Recontre was born in 1800 near St Louis, then center of the fur trade. Recountre befriended fellow Frenchman Pierre Chouteau Jr. of the American Fur Company. Recountre joined the company at 15 years old. He became well-respected by other traders and Native Americans along the Missouri River between St. Louis and Fort Union. Recountre established a company trading post on Bon Homme Island in the late 1820’s. He married a Sioux woman named Suldaro in 1837. Recountre served as a translator during the 1858 treaty negotiations that opened most of southeast South Dakota to settlement. Recountre received a section of land near his Bon Homme Island trading post for his services. Recountre, in 1859, sold this property to a group of settlers led by John Shober.
